Challenge

Connecticut Foodshare faced challenges with their 2024-2025 annual report. The team at CTFS approached DMS with an idea to create an interactive and eye-catching page. After meticulously going through data, statistics, and imagery, the CTFS and DMS teams were able to come together in their respective fields to create a visually appealing and informative report that captures the good work they do for the communities they serve.

This annual report design was well thought out from the beginning. Collaboration was crucial to create a stunning, well-branded, functional, and user-friendly collection of CTFS and their commitment to their mission.

Q&A: Nicole's Process

Our Art Director, Nicole let us in on her process of creating beautiful and impactful annual reports.

When you start designing an annual report, what’s the first thing you look at?

The first thing I look at is the purpose of the report and who it’s for. Before thinking about layout or visuals, I focus on understanding the audience, the key message CT Foodshare needs to communicate that year, and what success looks like, whether that’s building trust with donors, showing impact, or inspiring continued support. It’s also essential that the design clearly reflects CT Foodshare’s brand and voice, while staying highly usable, so the experience feels intuitive, accessible, and easy for users to navigate and engage with.

Annual reports can be data-heavy, how do you turn that information into something visually engaging?

When dealing with data‑heavy content, I focus on clarity and storytelling rather than showing everything at once. I break complex information into digestible sections, use visual hierarchy to guide the reader, and highlight the most important metrics so they stand out. Pairing data with visuals, short explanations, and real human stories helps give the numbers context and meaning. The goal is to make the information feel approachable and engaging, while still being accurate and easy for users to understand and navigate.

How do you decide on the overall look? Do you work closely with the client?

The overall look starts with really understanding the client: who they are, what they value, and the story they want to tell that year. For CT Foodshare, that meant grounding the design in their brand, voice, and mission, while also being mindful of their audience and goals. I use their brand guidelines as a foundation, but knowing the client helps inform the tone, visual emphasis, and emotional direction. I work closely with them throughout the process in regard to: sharing concepts, gathering feedback, and refining the design. This process makes sure that the final result feels authentic, on‑brand, and truly representative of their work and impact.

What is your process for organizing the data? How do you make it feel cohesive instead of overwhelming?

My process starts with organizing the data around a clear narrative. I look for themes and priority messages first, then group information into logical sections so it tells a story rather than feeling like a list of statistics. From there, I establish a strong visual hierarchy - deciding what needs the most emphasis and what can be supporting information. Repeating design patterns, spacing, and consistent visual treatments helps everything feel cohesive, while breaking content into smaller, digestible pieces keeps it from feeling overwhelming. The goal is to guide the user through the data in a way that feels intentional, clear, and easy to absorb.
