“Content is King.” – Bill Gates, 1996 When approaching digital content, it’s important to think of content and design as a dynamic duo, rather than two separate things. If content is king, think of design as the queen. The two rule together and when used right, they can create an enticing pair. What is content? By definition, content is information produced and presented to an audience. Examples of content in the digital space are social media posts, blogs, videos, and podcasts. Most people have been surrounded by content their entire lives; books, movies, television, magazines and newspapers to name a few. Creating content is something that needs careful consideration, as it should be useful, relevant, and informative. Content, when it is good or even great, can form a bond between you and your ideal customer. This encourages your audience to act, the desired action could be visiting your site, buying a product, or subscribing to your service. What is design? What comes to mind when you think of design? The aesthetics are one part of it, but design has layers. Design that is high-quality has many benefits, one of which being a brand guide. Companies are encouraged to use a brand guide to lay the foundation and set some rules for their brand going forward. Designers, content creators, and other members of your team will look to your brand guidelines to ensure your brands style is consistent throughout. A Dynamic Duo Kings and Queens often rule together, so why would content and design be any different? Giving each of them the attention they deserve is a great way to ensure a successful collaboration. A good example of content and design working together is infographics. Infographics have become more popular in recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. By accomplishing content and design goals, infographics capture the reader’s attention while also giving them something pleasing to look at. By working together, design and content can join forces to achieve the goal of engaging, well-designed content that sparks conversation.
